How to make a scanned PDF searchable

Add an invisible OCR text layer to scanned PDFs so you can search, select and copy text — without changing how the pages look. Free, in 24 languages, no upload.

Key takeaways

  • A scanned PDF is only pictures — search and copy don't work until you run OCR.
  • OCR adds an invisible text layer; the pages look exactly the same.
  • Choose the right language(s) for accurate results.
  • Searchable PDFs are easier to archive, quote and read with screen readers.

You received a scanned contract, a 40-page report or old meeting minutes as PDF. It looks fine, but searching for a word finds nothing, and you can't copy a sentence. Here's how to fix that in a minute.

Is your PDF searchable?

Try one of these:

  • Press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F) and search for a word you can see. No result means no text layer.
  • Try to select a sentence with the mouse. If a rectangle selects the whole page, it's an image.

Make it searchable in four steps

  1. Open OCR PDF.
  2. Add your PDF (or several photos).
  3. Select the document language(s) — e.g. English, or Hebrew + English.
  4. Start OCR and download the new PDF.

Open the result and search again: every word can now be found, selected and copied.

What happens behind the scenes

OCR reads each page image, recognizes the words and places an invisible text layer exactly on top of them. Your PDF viewer shows the original image but searches the hidden text. That's why the document looks identical — nothing is redrawn.

Scanning new documents? Do it in one step

In Scan to PDF, tick Recognize text (OCR) before saving. Your new scans are searchable from the start.

Tips for accurate results

  • Scan at good quality — sharp, well lit, straight.
  • Choose the correct language; mixed documents need both languages.
  • Very small fonts? Rescan closer to the page.
  • Check important numbers (amounts, IDs) after OCR — no OCR is perfect.

Why searchable PDFs are worth it

  • Find anything instantly across your archive by name, number or keyword.
  • Copy quotes without retyping.
  • Accessibility: screen readers can read the text aloud.
  • Better compatibility with document systems that index text.

Need the text itself?

All of this runs in your browser — your PDF is never uploaded, which matters for contracts, medical letters and anything confidential.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my PDF is already searchable?

Open it and try to select a word or press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac). If nothing is found or nothing can be selected, the page is an image.

Does OCR make the file bigger?

Slightly. The text layer adds a small amount of data compared with the images.

Can I edit the text after OCR?

Not directly in the PDF. Convert it to Word with PDF to Word to edit the text.

Will OCR change the page images?

No. The original images stay untouched.
