Step-by-step guides, tips and answers for every Osd-Scan tool.

General questions

Is Osd-Scan really free?

Yes. Every web tool is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The website is supported by ads. A paid desktop app for Windows (one-time purchase, no ads) is coming soon.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens inside your browser on your own device. Your documents never leave your computer or phone, so nobody — including us — can see them. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.

Which browsers are supported?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Samsung Internet on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone/iPad. For the camera scanner on a phone the page must be opened over https.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no hard limit, but very large files (hundreds of MB) depend on your device memory. On phones we recommend files under 100 MB.

Why is the first scan or OCR slower?

The first time you use the scanner or text recognition, your browser loads the engine and language data once. After that it is cached and starts instantly.

Scan to PDF

Osd-Scan turns photos of paper into clean, straight, print-ready scans — like a dedicated scanner app. It finds the page edges, corrects the perspective with the real page proportions, removes shadows and enhances the text.

  1. Open the scanner and choose Scan with camera (phone or webcam) or Import to add existing photos or a PDF.
  2. Pick the mode: Document, Whiteboard, ID card or Book.
  3. Hold the camera over the page. The outline turns green when the page is steady and the photo is taken automatically (or tap the shutter).
  4. Tap a page to fine-tune: drag the corner handles to adjust the crop, choose a filter and rotate if needed.
  5. Drag pages to reorder, then choose page size, quality and optional text recognition (OCR) and press Save PDF.

Options explained

Auto color
Removes shadows and color casts, turns the paper white and keeps ink and stamp colors. Best for most documents.
Light text
Makes faint, grey or pencil text darker. Use for faded receipts and light prints.
Grayscale
Same cleanup as Auto color, without color. Smaller files.
Black & white
Pure black text on white — the smallest files and the crispest print. Not ideal for photos or signatures in color.
Whiteboard
Removes glare and grey background from whiteboards and boosts marker colors.
Original
The straightened photo without any enhancement.
ID card mode
Scan front and back; both sides are placed on one A4 page at real card size (85.6 × 54 mm) — perfect for forms that ask for a copy of your ID.
Book mode
Photograph an open book: the spread is split into left and right pages automatically.
Recognize text (OCR)
Adds an invisible text layer so you can search, select and copy text in the PDF. Supports 24 languages including Hebrew, Arabic, Urdu and Hindi.

Tips for best results

  • Place the page on a darker, plain surface — contrast makes edge detection almost perfect.
  • Use daylight or a bright room and avoid your own shadow over the page; the shadow remover handles soft shadows, not black ones.
  • Hold the phone parallel to the page. Small angles are corrected automatically, extreme angles reduce sharpness.
  • If the page fills the whole photo, Osd-Scan keeps the full image and only straightens the text.
  • Use Auto detect in the crop screen to re-run edge detection after you moved the corners.

Questions

The crop cut off part of my page — what do I do?

Tap the page, stay on the Crop tab and drag the round corner handles (or the edge handles in the middle of each side) to the real page corners. A magnifier appears so you can place them precisely. Press Done to apply.

Can I scan multiple pages into one PDF?

Yes. Keep capturing — every photo becomes a page. You can also mix camera shots and imported photos or PDF pages, then reorder them by dragging.

Can I import a PDF into the scanner?

Yes. Each PDF page is added as a page so you can apply filters (e.g. Black & white) and export again.

Open Scan to PDF

Merge PDF

Combine several PDF files into a single document, in exactly the order you want.

  1. Select two or more PDF files (you can add more later with Add more).
  2. Drag the file cards to change the order — the first card becomes the first pages.
  3. Press Merge PDF. The merged file downloads automatically.

Options explained

Order
Files are merged from left to right, top to bottom. Drag cards to reorder.

Tips for best results

  • Need only some pages of a file? Use Organize PDF after merging to delete or reorder individual pages.
  • Bookmarks and form fields of the original files are not kept; the page content is.
  • To merge images too, first convert them with JPG to PDF.

Questions

Is there a limit on the number of files?

No fixed limit. Dozens of files work fine on a normal computer.

Will the quality change?

No. Pages are copied exactly as they are — nothing is re-compressed.

Open Merge PDF

Split PDF

Split one PDF into several files, or extract the pages you need.

  1. Select a PDF.
  2. Choose a mode: Custom ranges, Every N pages, Each page or Pick pages.
  3. Enter the ranges or number of pages.
  4. Press Split PDF. Several files are downloaded together as a ZIP.

Options explained

Custom ranges
E.g. 1-3, 4-6, 7 creates three files. Tick “Merge all ranges” to put them into one file instead.
Every N pages
Cuts the document into equal parts, e.g. every 2 pages.
Each page
Creates one PDF per page.
Pick pages
E.g. 1, 3, 5-7 — saves just these pages into one new PDF.

Tips for best results

  • Use an open range like 5- to mean “from page 5 to the end”.
  • Page numbers always refer to the original document.

Questions

Why did I get a ZIP file?

When the result is more than one PDF, all files are packed in a ZIP so you download them with one click. Windows and macOS open ZIP files natively.

Open Split PDF

Quick selection helpers in the side panel.

Tips for best results

  • Hover a page to see it larger in the thumbnail.
  • You cannot remove every page — at least one must remain.

  1. Select a PDF.
  2. Click the pages you want to keep — a blue check appears.
  3. Press Extract pages.

Options explained

Select all / Clear / Even pages
Quick selection helpers.

Tips for best results

Open Extract pages

Organize PDF

Sort, rotate, delete and add pages — combine several PDFs page by page.

  1. Select one or more PDFs. All pages appear as thumbnails.
  2. Drag pages to reorder. Use the buttons on each page to rotate or delete it.
  3. Add blank pages or reverse the order from the side panel.
  4. Press Organize PDF.

Adds an empty page (same size as the previous page) at the end — drag it anywhere.
Reverse order
Flips the whole page order, handy for scans that were fed back-to-front.

Tips for best results

  • On touch devices, press and drag a page to move it.
  • Rotation is stored losslessly — the page content is not re-rendered.

Questions

Can I mix pages from different PDFs?

Yes. Add several files and drag pages between them freely.

Open Organize PDF

Compress PDF

Reduce PDF size while keeping text and vector graphics sharp. Only images are optimized, so text stays crisp and searchable.

  1. Select one or more PDFs.
  2. Choose a compression level.
  3. Press Compress PDF and compare the before/after size on the result page.

Options explained

Extreme
Smallest file. Images are downscaled to ~110 dpi and compressed strongly. Good for email attachments.
Recommended
Best balance — images around 150 dpi, very good quality.
Less
High quality, moderate size reduction. Good for printing.

Tips for best results

  • Scanned PDFs (made of photos) shrink the most — often 70–95%.
  • PDFs that are mostly text are already small; they may shrink only a little.
  • If the result would be larger than the original, you get the original back.

Questions

Does compression remove text or links?

No. Text, fonts, links and vector drawings are not touched — only embedded images are recompressed, plus a lossless structure optimization.

Open Compress PDF

Repair PDF

Rebuild damaged or corrupted PDF files so they open again.

  1. Select the damaged PDF(s).
  2. Press Repair PDF.
  3. Open the repaired copy. If some pages are still missing, the original data was not recoverable.

Tips for best results

  • Typical fixes: broken cross-reference tables, truncated downloads, wrong object offsets.
  • Password-protected files can be repaired too; the password stays.

Questions

The repaired file is still broken — why?

If the file was cut off during download or a disk error destroyed data, the missing part cannot be reconstructed. Try downloading the original again.

Open Repair PDF

OCR PDF

Make scanned PDFs and photos searchable. OCR (optical character recognition) adds an invisible text layer over the image so you can search, select and copy text.

  1. Select a scanned PDF or an image.
  2. Select every language used in the document (e.g. Hebrew + English).
  3. Press Make searchable. The recognized text is also shown on the result page for copying.

Options explained

Languages
24 languages are available, including English, Hebrew, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Persian, Bengali, Russian, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Skip pages that already contain text
Pages that already have real text are left as they are (faster and avoids double text).

Tips for best results

  • Choose only the languages that are actually in the document — extra languages slow OCR and can reduce accuracy.
  • For best results the text should be at least ~10 px high in the image (a normal phone photo of an A4 page is fine).
  • Straighten and crop photos with the Scanner first for better recognition.

Questions

Does OCR change how my PDF looks?

No. The page looks identical; an invisible text layer is added on top.

How accurate is it?

On clean printed text accuracy is typically above 98%. Handwriting is not supported.

Open OCR PDF

JPG to PDF

Tips for best results

  • Store the password safely — encrypted files cannot be opened without it, and we cannot recover it.

Questions

How secure is it?

AES-256 is the strongest encryption supported by the PDF standard. Security mainly depends on the password strength.

Open Protect PDF

Unlock PDF

Remove the password and restrictions from a PDF you are allowed to open.

  1. Select the protected PDF.
  2. Enter its password (leave empty if it only has printing/copying restrictions).
  3. Press Unlock PDF.

Options explained

Password
The document open password.

Tips for best results

  • Only unlock files that you own or have permission to use.

Questions

I forgot the password — can you crack it?

No. Osd-Scan does not break encryption. Without the password the file cannot be unlocked.

Open Unlock PDF

Redact PDF

Permanently remove sensitive information — names, ID numbers, account details.

  1. Select a PDF.
  2. Drag black boxes over sensitive areas, or type words/numbers in “Find & redact” and click Mark all matches.
  3. Press Redact & save.

Options explained

Find & redact
Finds every occurrence of a word or number on all pages.
Flatten every page
Also converts pages without redactions to images, so no hidden text remains anywhere.
