Scanning

How to scan handwritten notes to a clear PDF

Turn notebook pages, lecture notes and sketches into clean PDFs. Make pencil readable, remove lined-paper grey and organize notes by subject.

Key takeaways

  • Light text makes pencil and faint pen strokes dark and readable.
  • Black & white gives the cleanest notes and the smallest files.
  • Scan a whole notebook as one PDF per subject or per week.
  • OCR works best on neat handwriting; don't rely on it for messy notes.

Lecture notes, a planning notebook, a sketch on a napkin — handwritten pages are easy to lose and hard to share. Scanning them takes a minute and makes them searchable, printable and safe.

How to scan notebook pages

  1. Open Scan to PDF in Document mode.
  2. Lay the page flat on a dark surface. For a bound notebook, open it fully and frame one page at a time.
  3. Let auto-capture take the photo, then continue with the next page.
  4. Choose the best filter (see below) and save the PDF.

Lined and squared paper

Notebook lines can look busy in scans. Black & white usually removes light-blue lines entirely. With other filters, increase Clean background in Adjust to fade them.

Organize your notes

  • One PDF per subject, or per week for ongoing notes.
  • Date-first file names: 2026-10-03 Biology lecture 4.pdf.
  • Add new pages to an existing PDF with Merge PDF.
  • Rearrange pages with Organize PDF.

Can the text be searched?

OCR (text recognition) is designed for printed text. It can handle neat block letters, but cursive handwriting is rarely recognized accurately. If you write neatly, turn on OCR when saving and try a search — otherwise, keep the scan as a clean image and add a clear file name. More about OCR.

Sharing notes with classmates

Scanned notes are easy to send in a group chat. If the PDF is large, compress it first. Want to highlight key points? Use Edit PDF to add highlights and comments.

Handwritten notes don't have to stay trapped in a notebook. A quick scan keeps them safe, readable and with you everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Can OCR read handwriting?

It can read neat, printed handwriting reasonably well, but cursive and messy notes give poor results. Scanning still makes them easy to keep and share.

Why do the notebook lines look grey?

Lined paper has colored lines that turn grey in scans. Black & white or Clean background lightens them.

How do I scan a spiral notebook?

Tear-off pages are easiest. Otherwise hold the notebook flat and frame one page at a time in Document mode.

What's the best filter for diagrams in color?

Auto color keeps colored pens and highlighters while whitening the paper.
